Seven research projects will be share funding of $273,000 over the next couple of years to tackle critical issues facing the Great Salt Lake.

The state Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands culled proposals from multiple entities seeking funding, which comes mostly from royalties received from industries that use the brines of the Great Salt Lake.

Five topics of critical interest were identified by the multi-agency Great Salt Lake Technical Team:

- Effects of a drying lake

- Assessing habitat quality

- Effects of diking

- Mercury

- Monitoring

Grant recipients are the University of Utah, Utah State University, Weber State University, Westminster College, the U.S. Geological Survey, Bio-West Inc., and CH2M Hill.
