LAYTON — Ben Schilleman, who grew up a couple of miles from Valley View Golf Course, is the leader at the halfway point of the Men's State Amateur first round after shooting a 6-under-par 66 Wednesday at Valley View.

Schilleman, who had four birdies and an eagle leads Provo's Jared Overton by one shot and 16-year-old Devon Purser of Clearfield by two shots. Former State Am champion Tommy Sharp, South Jordan's Chad Crowther and Sandy's Andrew Barton all came in with 69s.

Utah Jazz guard Kyle Korver, playing in his first State Am on a host club exemption, struggled with a pair of 8's on his scorecard and finished with an 86.

The other half of the draw won't be finished until about 7:30 p.m.
