Millard County van rollover kills boy, injures 7
A 10-year-old boy died and seven people were injured in a van rollover Wednesday morning in Millard County.
A Chevrolet van headed south on I-15 about 9:10 a.m. rolled when the driver drifted across the highway and then overcorrected, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
Two of the eight occupants were ejected from the vehicle and John Vibas, 10, was partially ejected. He died at the scene.
A medical helicopter transported two passengers in critical condition to a Nephi hospital. Four others in fair condition and one in serious condition were taken by ambulance to the hospital, the UHP said. Three of them were later taken to hospitals in Salt Lake City, said UHP trooper Cameron Roden.
While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, the UHP believes fatigue was a factor. The van drifted onto the left shoulder, corrected to the right and then drifted left again, rolling as the driver attempted to right it the second time. The van had Alberta, Canada, license plates, but its destination remains unknown.
It is believed that most of the van's occupants were wearing seat belts, including Vibas, Roden said.
