OGDEN — Seventeen Ogden residents were forced from their homes Tuesday evening when a fire caused damage to a building that housed six apartments.

Ogden City Fire Department received a call about a structure fire at 2561 Orchard Ave. just after 6 p.m. and responded quickly to find flames coming from the rear of the building, Deputy Chief Chad Tucker said.

There was also heavy smoke throughout the old building, which had been converted to a multifamily dwelling, Tucker said.

"The fire caused an estimated $75,000 in damages," he said. "Due to the damages, none of the residents will be able to return to their apartments (Tuesday night)."

The American Red Cross has been called in to assist with sheltering and other needs for the affected families, Tucker said. No injuries were reported.

Investigators were working late Tuesday to determine the cause of the fire.
