ZURICH, Switzerland — United States midfielder Michael Bradley has been suspended for three international matches by soccer's governing body following a confrontation at last month's Confederations Cup.

FIFA's decision Tuesday said the suspension included the 3-2 loss to Brazil in the final. He will serve the final game Wednesday night when the U.S. plays Honduras in the second group-stage game of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, where Bradley isn't on the roster. Bradley will be eligible to return for the Aug. 12 World Cup qualifier at Mexico.

Bradley, son of U.S. coach Bob Bradley, received a red card for a challenge in the 87th minute of the 2-0 semifinal upset of Spain. He apparently confronted Uruguayan referee Jorge Larrionda afterward.

FIFA's disciplinary committee said he breached its disciplinary code "by committing acts of misconduct against opponents and match officials in the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 match between USA and Spain." Technically, he was given a four-match suspension, with the final game of the penalty held in abeyance.

Bradley will also be on probation for six months, during which time he would have the fourth match added on to any other penalties he incurs.

Larrionda was also the referee during the United States' 1-1 draw with Italy in the group stages of the 2006 World Cup, a match that finished with nine Americans on the field against 10 Italians after Larrionda issued three red cards.
