'Warehouse 13' is empty; '10 Things' is a hoot

But there's no sense of wonder, nothing to spark the imagination — not even anything that's entertaining — in the premiere of "Warehouse 13."
Yes, a lot of people, including yours truly, have mocked The Powers That Be at NBC-Universal for changing the name of the Sci Fi Channel to SyFy. But all would be forgiven if we had the slightest indication that anybody at the channel understands the genre. Or understands anything other than trying to attract that "broad" audience that doesn't care about science fiction.
Of course, to get big ratings for "Warehouse 13" they'll have to appeal to viewers who don't recognize bad TV when they see it.
At best, "Warehouse 13" is silly. At worst, it's stupid.
How in the world ... in the galaxy … did a great show like "Battlestar Galactica" end up on the Sci Fi Channel/SyFy?
Obviously, it was a fluke.
Too bad.
10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU was not your typical '90s teen movie — it was funny and charming.
And the new sitcom "10 Things I Hate About You," which premieres at 9 and 10 p.m., is not your typical ABC Family series — it's the best thing the cable channel has ever come up with.
No, it doesn't have Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, as did the movie, but it does have essentially the same story — about two very different sisters negotiating high school.
Kat (Lindsey Shaw) is an activist with a razor-sharp wit; Bianca (Meaghan Martin) is a social climber intent on popularity.
"How do I look?" Bianca asks.
"Shallow," Kat replies.
"Thank you!" Bianca says.
Gil Junger, who directed the movie, is launching the series. And Larry Miller returns as Walter, the over-protective father of the Stratford sisters.
"Look, it's the first day of school," he says. "So remember the most important thing — don't get pregnant!"
There are more laugh-out-loud moments in the first two minutes of "10 Things I Hate About You" than in most episodes of most of what passes for TV comedy these days.
This one looks like a winner.
