Jordan, Ogden teacher unions to share federal mediator
Leaders of teachers' unions in Jordan and Ogden school districts are hoping a federal mediator will help negotiations.
Jordan District and the Jordan Education Association are at an impasse over pay and professional development days.
Ogden Education Association officials declined to say what their disagreement is with Ogden District. Both sides have agreed to keep the issues confidential, they said.
The two unions plan to use mediator Lavonne Ritter, who is with the Federal Mediation Conciliation Services based in Las Vegas. The service, including travel, food and lodging, is funded by the federal government.
Ritter plans to lead Jordan District mediations July 20 and 21. Ogden District mediations are scheduled for July 22 and 23.
"I am hopeful we can come to a middle ground," said OEA president Mary Courney. "We have agreed to many things. There are just a couple of sticky issues."
JEA president Robin Frodge said the union wants the district to reinstate professional development days, which, when axed, result in a pay decrease. The union also wants district employees to get their scheduled salary increases of steps and lanes.
"We want to show employees they are valued and appreciated," she said. "We want to attract and retain quality educators."
A lane increase is a salary adjustment for those who have earned extra academic degrees. Step increases are for years of experience.
