HUNTINGTON, Emery County — A man was retrieved from the wilderness by a medical helicopter on Saturday after his all-terrain vehicle crashed while coming around a turn.

The 26-year-old man suffered face, head, chest and leg injuries in the 7:20 p.m. crash, said park ranger Larry Johansen. The wreck likely occurred because of excessive speed, he said.

The crash occurred about 15 miles north of Joe's Valley Reservoir and 10 miles south of state Route 31, Johansen said. The medical chopper was called because rescuing the man by ambulance would have meant a 15-mile ride over dirt roads, he said.

Luckily for the crash victim, a forest service employee was nearby at the time of the accident and was able to radio for help. The man was out of mobile phone range, Johansen said.

The victim was not wearing a helmet when he crashed, the ranger said.
