WEST VALLEY CITY — A mobile home was destroyed by fire early Saturday morning.

West Valley Assistant Fire Chief Kris Romijn said emergency teams received a call at 12:15 a.m. about a car on fire at 7000 E. Apaloosa Drive. When crews arrived, the car was encased in flames and the fire had spread through the carport to the porch and portions of the mobile home.

Two women, ages 40 and 58, were living in the home and escaped with only the clothes on their back, Romijn said. The Red Cross released a statement indicating it had provided the women with shelter and additional clothing.

Romijn estimated the damage to the home at between $60,000 and $100,000.

"Witnesses said they saw something like fireworks under the car," Romijn said. "But we're not sure that's the cause. It's still under investigation."

As the Unified Fire Authority as well as agencies from South Salt Lake and West Valley City worked to quell the flames, a second fire began about a block away. A spinning firework lit papers in a plastic case on fire and caused about $200 in damage to a second mobile home.

A third home was damaged by the heat generated by the initial fire. Romijn estimated warping in the siding had caused about $1,000 in damage.
