Ogden police are increasing their focus on gang activity in one area of the city following a gang-related shooting Thursday night.

Ogden Police Lt. Loring Draper said Aldo Godinez, 19, was sitting on his porch at 807 20th St. around 11:43 p.m. Thursday when he was approached by a man who asked who he was. When Godinez responded, the man shot at him with a 12-gauge shotgun.

"It was at a distance of about 15 feet," Draper said. "There were pellets in his hand and his hip, and he ran into the house yelling that he'd been hit."

After Godinez entered the home, a second round was fired that hit a wall and door frame but did not injure anyone inside, police said. When officers arrived at the scene, the victim already had been loaded into a private vehicle that was to take him to the hospital. Officers intercepted the vehicle and called for an ambulance.

Police said Godinez was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital.

"He's probably still there," Draper said. "We're not sure what his condition is, but it's not life-threatening. Officers were talking to him last night."

Draper said the man was not cooperative, and they believe the shooting was gang-related.

"We have some ideas it may be some retaliation for previous activity, which is typical gang stuff," he said. "It's not special, they just retaliate and keep one-upping one another."

Despite Godinez's lack of cooperation, Draper said police have some leads and are planning on paying special attention to gang activity to prevent another retaliation.

"We pay attention to the gang activity anyway, but we're probably going to spend a lot more time preventing more retaliation," Draper said. "We're going to try to nip it in the quick to try and keep gang activity from getting really crazy."
