Lock all doors and windows.

 Set interior and exterior lights on random timer.

 Have friend or neighbor watch your house for any suspicious activity.

 Ask friend or neighbor to collect mail and newspapers while out of town.

 Never leave a key hidden outside. Burglars know all the best hiding places.

 Install an alarm system.

 If you have a security system, ask your alarm provider about wireless backup or Web-enabled security in the event your phone line fails or is tampered with and so you can receive alerts via your cell phone or other personal digital assistant.
