NORTH SALT LAKE — With an upcoming vacancy in North Salt Lake's mayoral seat, two candidates have emerged to vie for it.

Councilwoman Lisa Watts Baskin, who will complete her first term on the council at the end of 2009, is running against former councilman Lynn Ballard, who ran for mayor two years ago but lost against current Mayor Shanna Schaefermeyer.

Schaefermeyer, a former council member, was appointed as mayor when former Mayor Kay Briggs resigned to devote more time to his job. Schaefermeyer won the two-year term as mayor but declined to run again this year.

Two council seats are up for election this year: those held by Baskin and councilman Matt Hardy.

For information about filing as a candidate in North Salt Lake, visit www.nslcity.com or call 801-936-3877.

The filing period ends July 15.
