Archers to compete in Ogden
The 2009 World Archery Youth Championships, to be held at Weber State University and Lindquist Field in Ogden, will be taking place July 12-19. The World Archery Youth Championships will gather more than 430 of the world's best youth archers and nearly 200 coaches, along with numerous family members and fans. Participants are between the ages of 14 and18 and were required to qualify for this event through each of their more than 50 respective countries.
Youth participants will travel from countries as far as Australia, Barbados, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Italy, Korea, Lebanon, Nigeria, Spain, Venezuela, among many others.
Thirty-one participants are traveling to Utah from around the United States, including Riley Whiting, a 14-year-old archer from Logan, Utah.
Live music at the bird
Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort's free Cool Air Concert Series kicks off this July 4 weekend with three concerts on the new Peruvian Terrace. Papa Mali brings his funky New Orleans sounds to Little Cottonwood Canyon on Friday; Americana music courtesy of Kort McCumber fills the air on Independence Day; and Danny Barnes, fresh off his appearance on the new Dave Matthews Band record, wraps up the weekend with an original blend of folk and country on Sunday.
Snowbird's Cool Air Concerts, presented by the Snowbird Renaissance Center, begin with opening acts at 5 p.m., followed by headliners at 6 p.m. Coolers and families are welcome at all events. The SRC is also presenting a number of marquee festivals throughout the summer, including the Mountain Music Festival (July 8-12), Rock & Blues (July 24-26), and the Snowbird Tent Revival: A Celebration of Gospel Music (Aug. 14-16). Bird refuge road closure
The Wildlife Education Center at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge in Brigham City will be closed on Friday and Saturday. The auto tour loop is open to visitors during daylight hours only. Work on the county road, which provides access to the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge and its auto tour route, is nearly complete. Guided refuge tours will be provided by volunteers through July and August.
Tours are offered on Wednesday and Thursday at 9 a.m. and Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Each tour lasts approximately three hours.
