Dream Team to be enshrined in U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame
John Stockton, Michael Jordan and David Robinson will all be enshrined — along with Jazz coach Jerry Sloan — into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame this fall in Springfield, Mass.
Turns out, they'll also be enshrined together with the 1992 Dream Team — alongside Karl Malone, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley et. al — as members of the Class of 2009 in the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame.
That original Dream Team has been considered to have been perhaps the greatest collection of basketball players ever. The U.S. team easily cruised to the gold medal, compiling an 8-0 record and beating opponents by an average margin of 43.8 points during those Summer Games in Barcelona.
Stockton's participation in the Olympics was limited due to a leg injury — he averaged 2.8 points and 2.0 assists in four games. But Malone, who will be eligible for the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2010, was one of the many contributors, having averaged 13.0 points on 64.5 percent shooting and 5.3 rebounds.
Park City skier Picabo Street will also be inducted to this Hall of Fame, the U.S. Olympic Committee announced this afternoon.
Other members of the Class of 2009 include: Teresa Edwards (basketball), Michael Johnson (athletics), Willye White (athletics), Mary T. Meagher (swimming), Sarah Will (Paralympic alpine skiing), Abie Grossfield (longtime men's gymnastics coach), Andrea Mead-Lawrence (skiing veteran) and Peter Ueberroth (special contributor).
The formal ceremony will take place on Aug. 12 at McCormick Place in Chicago, which is hoping to host the 2016 Olympics. It will be televised on NBC in September.
