Utah Jazz: Team signs draft pick Maynor
Eric Maynor is now officially a member of the Utah Jazz.
The rookie point guard signed his contract, which will pay him about $1.3 million his first NBA season, paving way for his participating in the Jazz's mini-camp this week and the upcoming 2009 Orlando Pro Summer League.
Utah picked up the Virginia Commonwealth University standout with the 20th overall pick in last Thursday's NBA Draft, with hopes that he will fill a much-needed role as a reliable backup to spell Deron Williams.
The 6-3, 175-pounder was twice named the Colonial Athletic Association player of the year. He earned multiple All-American honors his senior season, including being named second team All-America by Sports Illustrated, and was a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award for top college point guard in the nation.
Maynor, the first VCU player ever drafted in the first round, averaged 22.4 points and 6.2 assists as a senior. Over his four years, he scored the most points (1,953) and dished out more assists (674) than any player in school history.
Maynor will join the Jazz in training this week in Florida. Utah's first game in Orlando will be Monday against Boston. The summer league continues through July 10, with the Jazz playing one game each day.
Second-round pick Goran Suton, a center from Michigan State taken in the second round, and second-year NBA center Kosta Koufos will also be on the squad.
