LOGAN — Utah State has been crowned the national champion of the Excellence in Management Cup, presented by Texas A&M's Laboratory for the Study of Intercollegiate Athletics, it was announced on Monday.

The purpose of the Excellence in Management Cup is to determine which athletic departments win the most championships in accordance to financial expenditures.

During the 2008-09 academic year, Utah State won a school-record by tying five conference championships, which is its most since joining the Western Athletic Conference four years ago. USU also won five league titles in 1994 and 1998 as a member of the Big West Conference. Teams that won conference championships for USU this past season were men's and women's cross country, women's soccer, men's basketball, and men's outdoor track and field.

Following Utah State in the top five for the Excellence in Management Cup were Kent State, Louisiana Tech, Akron and BYU. The top-10 ranked departments were all from non-BCS affiliated universities. The highest ranked BCS program was Oregon at No. 11.
