PROVO — Fireworks are a fun part of Independence Day celebrations, but there are new rules in Provo this year about when to shoot them off.

Fireworks can be used three days before, the day of and three days after July 4, July 24, January 1 and the Chinese New Year, and they should not be discharged in restricted areas — within 20 feet of weeds, grasses, trees, shrubs, fences or structures — or in city parks unless otherwise designated.

Only fireworks approved by the state fire marshal may be ignited or sold. Usually, fireworks that go over 10 feet in the air are not allowed.

For a list of state-approved fireworks, visit publicsafety.utah.gov or call the Provo fire marshal at 801-852-6339.

Along with fireworks restrictions, there are new Freedom Festival parade regulations.

The Grand Parade starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at 1060 N. University Ave. Spots can be saved on University Avenue starting at 3 p.m. Friday and on Center Street, 100 South and 200 East starting at 5 a.m. the day of the parade. Also, there is no parking after 8 p.m. Friday along the route of the parade.

Any personal property used to reserve a spot should be attended at all times, or it may be removed by law enforcement officers.

Signs that list the rules are posted along the route and will be enforced by parade staff and Provo police.

For more information about the parade, visit www.freedomfestival.org, and for further information about saving spots, visit www.provo.org.
