Not abstinence-only

Utah does not have an "abstinence-only" curriculum (June 29). A curriculum objective states, "Identify means of prevention of early and/or unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (e.g., abstinence, disease prevention, contraception/condom use)."

The real issue is where is the best place to help kids if they choose to initiate sex outside of marriage. If kids think they are responsible enough to have sex, their parents should seek help from a medical professional who can provide testing for sexually transmitted diseases and counseling about correct condom use.

That is where this discussion belongs and is far more likely to produce behavior change.
