Pleasant Grove woman dies in accident
PLEASANT GROVE — An 88-year-old woman died Thursday after her car slammed into a boulder.
Afton B. Miller, of Pleasant Grove, was traveling east on 1100 North around 5 p.m. when she came to the two-way-stop intersection at 600 West in Pleasant Grove.
A man in his mid-30s had assumed the intersection was a four-way stop, so he stopped, then proceeded through the intersection, said Pleasant Grove Police Sgt. Ernesto Ferron.
As he went through, Miller tried to veer away but couldn't avoid being hit by the man's car, said Utah County sheriff's deputy Ray Edwards.
After the collision, Miller lost control of her car and veered into a large boulder that was part of a decorative wall in the residential area, Ferron said. Miller was transported to American Fork Hospital by ground, then flown to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, where she died.
Speed was not a factor in the crash, Edwards said, but failure to yield to other vehicles and the stop sign were.
Despite the tragedy, the Miller family said they are not angry at the other driver. "The Miller family knows that this was truly an accident and has no ill feelings at all," said daughters Linda Johns and Helen Warnick.
