"Certainly, there are fundamental things," she said. "For instance, not to murder. We believe human beings are created in God's image and therefore every life is sacred. The choices you make have to take that into account."
From a Buddhist perspective, that principle of harm is fundamental in decision-making, according to the Rev. Jerry Hirano with the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple. Any action that causes harm to an individual or another person should generally be avoided.
"The deed which causes remorse afterwards and results in weeping and tears is ill-done," said the Rev. Hirano, quoting words from Buddha. "The deed which causes no remorse afterwards and results in joy and happiness is well done."
Like Rabbi Rosen, the Rev. Hirano said he couldn't find it within himself to judge another person for their actions. He said he is more concerned with trying to be mindful of his own choices.
For members of the Episcopal faith, it is important for people to "seek the mind of Christ" when making decisions, according to the Rev. Canon Mary June Nestler with the Episcopal Diocese of Salt Lake City. Although the church does have guidelines and rules for people to follow, it is generally inclined to allow people to use their individual conscious to make decisions, she said.
"I think we would say nothing should be taken in haste and at the very end of the day, people should understand they are each responsible to God and our conscious must play a huge role in our decision-making," the Rev. Nestler said.
