PROVO (AP) — The family of a 95-year-old Provo man who fell 40 feet and spent a night in Provo Canyon after going out for a hike says he has died of his injuries.
George A. Jarvis had several broken bones from the fall. He had been missing for more than 24 hours when a motorist who was stopped at a red light on Saturday caught a fleeting glimpse of him from a distance and went to investigate.
Police said Jarvis had fallen about 40 feet off an overgrown footpath.
When he was found, Jarvis was conscious and coherent, but his condition deteriorated, and Jarvis' family said he died Tuesday at a hospital.
Jarvis' son, Dave Jarvis, said that because of his health his father had been asked not to hike, but he was insistent on maintaining his freedom.
