Libraries to keep Dan Brown novel under wraps
FARMINGTON — Just as they have for J.K. Rowling and Stephenie Meyer, Davis County officials have promised to keep Dan Brown's latest book, "The Lost Symbol," under lock and key until the book's official release date.
Brown is also the author of "The Da Vinci Code" and "Angels and Demons," both of which have been made into films starring Tom Hanks.
Like Brown's other novels, "The Lost Symbol" features symbologist Robert Langdon as its protagonist. The book will have an initial printing of 5 million copies.
Chris Sanford, director of the Davis County Library, said publisher Random House has asked for signed contracts with libraries that state libraries will not make "The Lost Symbol" available before 12:01 a.m. Sept. 15, the book's official release date.
Already, 132 holds have been placed on the book in Davis County. In Salt Lake County, 420 holds have been placed; 111 holds have been placed in Salt Lake City; and 14 holds have been placed in Provo.
Sanford said the library has permission from the publisher to receive the books early and process them, but it won't allow the books to be picked up until the county's seven library branches open at 10 a.m.
The library agreed to previous similar requests from Scholastic, publisher of the Harry Potter books, and from Little, Brown Young Readers, publishers of Stephenie Meyer's novels in the Twilight series.
