BYU student crowned Miss Utah 2009

Whitney Merrifield, Miss Utah County, has been crowned Miss Utah 2009.

Merrifield's platform is "Be the Change Utah — Creating Unity and Breaking Stereotypes." She also will serve as the official spokeswoman for the state Child Protection Registry, which is designed to protect families from adult-oriented material.

Merrifield is a BYU student working toward a degree in communications. She hopes to become a broadcast journalist.

Merrifield was crowned on Saturday and wins a $10,000 scholarship. She now goes on to the Miss America Pageant.
