BYU student crowned Miss Utah 2009
In this July 12, 2008 file photo, Whitney Merrifield, Miss Pleasant Grove, reacts to being named the 1st runner up in the Miss Utah Scholarship Program. This year, Merrifield won the title of Miss Utah.
Whitney Merrifield, Miss Utah County, has been crowned Miss Utah 2009.
Merrifield's platform is "Be the Change Utah — Creating Unity and Breaking Stereotypes." She also will serve as the official spokeswoman for the state Child Protection Registry, which is designed to protect families from adult-oriented material.
Merrifield is a BYU student working toward a degree in communications. She hopes to become a broadcast journalist.
Merrifield was crowned on Saturday and wins a $10,000 scholarship. She now goes on to the Miss America Pageant.
