Home burglary spawns a hip new club for teens

The closest thing to a chemical-induced euphoria will be sold at the club's snack bar: caffeine-packed energy drinks, fizzing soda and sweets so flavorsome and diet unfriendly that health-conscious school districts have outlawed their tasty goodness from vending machines.

Admittance into the teen-only retreat requires two things: a school activity card verifying a student is in grades nine through 12, and $7.

The club is tucked away in Lehi's commercial loop on the west side of I-15 at 425 S. Millpond Drive. The brick-and-mortar rowdy house sits far enough from homes so that when Mr. DJ blasts Fergie's bubble-gum pop track "Clumsy" or Lady Gaga's mega-hit "Poker Face" it doesn't startle Grandma.

Club Crush will thump tracks from 8 p.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays.

Creating a hip spot that will appeal to hard-to-please teens would be no minor feat. And it turns out it's a costly endeavor, too.

After purchasing big-ticket audio, lighting and security items — on top of a roughly $3,500 monthly lease — the Robisons hope their bottom line stays in the black.

"Yeah, we're not in it to make money," Paige Robison said. "Shawn is keeping his job. This is just to keep teens off the street and out of trouble over the weekends."

Paige Robison, 37, admitted to being as excited as her children about slamming down remixes with a high school crowd, an enthusiasm largely stemming from 20-year-old nostalgia about regularly attending "High School Night" on Fridays at Provo's now-defunct dance club, The Palace.

"Kids get into trouble when they get bored," Shawn Robison said. "This has gotta help."
