Rachel Downward, public relations and advertising director for Echelon Edge Academy of Hair, Skin and Nails, said she would also advise people to use a special protective conditioner prior to jumping in the pool or heading out for a weekend in nature.

"When you're outdoors, the sun and the air quality that we can sometimes get have a lot of an effect on one's hair, especially since we're such a dry state," said Downward, who also teaches at the Sandy-based Academy. "We do have styling aids that can help protect your hair from the heat and environment."

At Echelon Edge, a number of services are offered to help people repair, maintain or enhance their skin and hair. Some services include facials, hair waxes and treatments to reduce cellulite. Moore Hair Design also offers some spa-type services.

From Downward's perspective, it is important for people to maintain and protect their appearance, particularly in the summer when most are showing a little extra skin. "In the summertime … everyone wants their body to be up to par," she said.
