The National Weather Service said partly sunny skies Sunday afternoon will likely be only a brief respite before a new band of wet weather moves into the Wasatch Front later in the day.

Meteorologist Chris Young at the NWS Salt Lake office said thunderstorm cells were moving into northern Utah early Sunday afternoon and severe weather warnings had been issued for Duchesne and Carbon counties.

Young said brief, heavy rain and hail was expected and would likely move as far south as Provo through Sunday afternoon and into the evening.

While the 2 inches or so of rain that have fallen in the state this June is far above the average of .77 inches for the month, Young said accumulations were no where near the record of over 3.8 inches that fell in June, 1998.

Things should dry out in time for the Monday commute, and stay that way through Wednesday, but Young said a system now off the coast of California will likely bring more moisture to the state by Thursday.
