Real Salt Lake: Olave has brain lapse in Houston
HOUSTON — For all of the wonderful things Real Salt Lake defender Jamison Olave does during the course of a match, he also does some stupid things. On Saturday night Olave put his team at a big disadvantage against Houston with one of his more boneheaded moves yet.
In the 58th minute with RSL leading 1-0 Olave curiously tried jumping in front of Brian Ching as he attempted a harmless throw-in near the corner flag. The fact Olave had already been shown a yellow card in the first half made his brain lapse all the more puzzling.
"I've got to look at the video, but if it's as bad as I think it is, I'm going to be very, very unhappy because it's been addressed with him already that we can't afford to do that," said RSL coach Jason Kreis.
The red card reduced RSL to 10 men and forced it to play survival for the final 32 minutes.
It was Olave's second red card of the season, and RSL's third. Back on May 2 in a match at Colorado Olave was shown a straight red card in the first half for a needless challenge on Conor Casey near the sideline. In that match RSL already trailed 1-0 and any hope of a rally was dashed.
Olave will be forced to miss next week's home match against Toronto FC.
With over half the season remaining Real Salt Lake has now equaled its red card total from all of last season.
A SATISFYING POINT: Saturday's last-minute tie was a particularly satisfying result for Houston coach Dominic Kinnear. The point boosted Houston to 28 points in the standings and assures Kinnear that he'll be the MLS All-Star coach later this summer.
The MLS determines its coach based on the team with the most points in the standings through games on June 28. MLS All-Stars take on Everton of the English Premier League on July 29 at Rio Tinto Stadium.
GETTING THE CALL:Will Johnson (Canada) and Jean Alexandre (Haiti) were officially added to their respective country's national team rosters this weekend for the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Johnson joins eight other MLS players on the Canada National Team 30-man roster for the Gold Cup which runs from July 3-23. Canada is paired in a group with Jamaica, El Salvador and Costa Rica.
Alexandre is one of only two MLS players on Haiti's roster. Haiti is paired in a group with Grenada, Honduras and the United States.
Both players depart early this week for national team training camp and will miss at least the next two RSL games and perhaps more if their respective teams advance out of group play.
HORST ON LOAN: Real Salt Lake defender David Horst is expected to play his second match with the Austin Aztex today while on a short-term loan with the USL First Division team.
Last weekend Alexandre played a pair of matches for the injury-riddled Aztex and this weekend it's Horst's turn. Horst played 90 minutes in Friday's 1-1 draw with Carolina on Friday and he's expected to play again tonight.
Horst is one of three MLS players joining Austin this weekend along with Houston's Mike Chabala and Erick Ustruck.
