My condolences to the Cardall family. Their loss is tragic. As a firefighter, I am grateful for the work of our local law enforcement. Their training and policies across the board are proven to keep both us and them safe. Having been "surprised" by the physical aggression that an unstable patient can exhibit and having been caught up in a "wrestling" match, I can tell you it is very scary when the patient puts his hand on the officer's weapon. One of the reasons Tasers are deployed is that it keeps the officers and the aggressors at a safe distance. Aggressive criminals or patients with psychological difficulties must be treated the same. The size of the patient or the prowess of the officer has little to do with safety.
