Charges were filed Wednesday against a West Valley man prosecutors say went to a Taylorsville man's condo to ask for money and killed him during a fight after the man told him to leave.

The Salt Lake County District Attorney's office announced the charges against Quent Evans.

Evans, who turns 43 today, was charged with murder, aggravated kidnapping causing serious bodily injury, aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery, all first-degree felonies. Evans also faces one count of unlawful acquisition of a financial transaction card and three counts of unlawful use of a financial transaction card, a third-degree felony.

The charges say that on Nov. 9, 2008, Evans went to Douglas McGrory's condo, 4147 S. 2700 West, and begged McGrory for money. McGrory told Evans to get out of the house and then a physical struggle occurred, the charges said.

"Evans tied McGrory up and jumped on his back," the charges said. "When they both fell to the ground, Evans grabbed a neck tie, put it around McGrory's neck and pulled on it."

Officers discovered McGrory's body the next day during a welfare check at the condo. An autopsy performed on McGrory determined that the cause of death was strangulation, according to the charges.

Evans told police that he took a debit card from an envelope that had the personal identification number written on it at McGrory's home, the charges said. He then took money from McGrory's account at a bank and used the debit card to make purchases at several other businesses, according to the charges.

If convicted of murder, Evans faces a possible sentence of 15 years to life in prison. The aggravated kidnapping charge carries a possible sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
