"In this alternative, they would continue to serve beyond the three-quarter with a new service, route deviation," Justin Jones said.
In addition, another 800 people who live outside three-quarters of a mile will get service, he said.
Legislators were encouraged by UTA's new plans. UTA has said a change in paratransit service is necessary because the agency gets the bulk of its revenues from sales taxes, which were down because of the recession by $18 million in 2008. UTA says the service costs $15 million a year to run.
"I just want to go on record that as you move forward," said Rep. Kory Holdaway, R-Taylorsville, "I do hope you keep in mind the role and purpose with regard to UTA's function of providing services for these people who are unable to provide transportation for themselves."
