SOUTHERN UTAH
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Head coach JR Payne announced the hiring of Toriano Towns and Bianca Ziemann as the associate head coach and assistant coach, respectively, as the newly appointed coaching staff continues to take shape. Payne was named head coach of the Thunderbirds' program in April of 2009.
Towns will serve as the recruiting and defensive coordinator for the Thunderbirds and comes to Southern Utah from Boise State, where he served as the defensive coordinator, helping the Broncos to back-to-back conference championships and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Prior to his stint at Boise State, Towns was an assistant coach at the University of Arizona and was involved in recruiting and scouting, and was also instrumental in the development of the Wildcats' post players.
Under Towns' tutelage, Arizona's Shawntinice Polk was named to the Kodak WBCA All-American team and all-Region 8 team and collected first-team all-Pac-10 honors. Towns began his career at Gonzaga University, serving as an assistant for three years. During that time, Gonzaga enjoyed the second-best turnaround in West Coast Conference history as the Bulldogs went from eighth in 2002-03 to second in 2003-04, posting an 18-12 record. The team went on to advance to its second-ever Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT).
"Toriano will be a great addition to Southern Utah women's basketball," Payne said. "He's a proven recruiter on a national scale and will elevate that part of our program to a new level. Toriano is a fierce competitor on the court and is extremely passionate about the growth and development of our student-athletes, not only as players, but as people."
Ziemann will break into the collegiate coaching ranks after a strong coaching career at Edison High School and as a club coach of the highly successful Orange County Swish "Black" basketball club. Last year at EHS, Ziemann led the Chargers to a Sunset League Championship and a CIF finals appearance.. Edison advanced to the quarterfinals in the state playoffs and finished with an overall record of 25-5.
Ziemann was a standout guard at Loyola Marymount University, helping LMU to its first WCC Championship and a first-round NCAA tournament appearance. She served as a team captain during her junior and senior years and went on to play professionally in the Netherlands after graduation. Ziemann played for Amazone during the 2006-07 season, leading the team to a Final Four and semifinal appearance and started in the Netherlands All-Star game.
"I couldn't be happier to have Bianca join our coaching staff," Payne said. "Bianca was an excellent player, both on the college level and professionally. As a point guard, she was always a great coach on the floor, and I have no doubt that she will be a great coach here at SUU as well. Her enthusiasm and energy is boundless and she'll be a great asset to the success of our program."
