Teacher accused of sex crime
FILLMORE — A Millard High School English teacher and basketball coach has been charged with having sex with a student.
Officers arrested Keith L. Gillins, 61, of Fillmore, Monday and booked him into jail. He was charged Tuesday with two counts of unlawful sexual contact with a 16- or 17-year-old, a third-degree felony, according to court records.
Deputies arrested him after police "received information" accusing Gillins of having an "unlawful sexual relationship" with a 17-year-old student, a news release from the Millard County Sheriff's Office states. Gillins was released from jail after posting $10,000 bail.
According to court documents, the sexual contact occurred Nov. 18, 2008.
Gillins served for 12 years as the mayor of Fillmore in the late '80s and '90s. He was also a boys basketball coach for the Millard Eagles and taught language arts at the high school.
Gillins was recently recognized as an adviser for the Sterling Scholars program at the school.
His initial court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
