SWAT called after man kills himself

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Police are still investigating what provoked a man to take his own life Monday night in Saratoga Springs.

A woman and her husband had been fighting Monday evening in their home on Amanda Lane, and the woman left with her two young children. As she left the house, she heard gunshots within her home and had a neighbor call 911 around 7:30 p.m., said Saratoga Springs Police Cpl. Aaron Rosen.

The Utah County Metro SWAT team responded and surrounded the house, knowing the man had a gun but not knowing his whereabouts or intentions within the home, Rosen said.

Police were unable to make contact with the man. Eventually a robot was sent into the home, which found the man's body around 12:20 a.m., Rosen said.

"They determined he was deceased, and the preliminary investigation shows the cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound," Rosen said. "It's a sad, sad story."

Police say the weapon was a handgun but are still conducting an investigation and did not release the man's name.

Rosen did not know of any history of police responding to the house for domestic violence calls.

The neighborhood was under a lockdown, with residents asked to stay inside their homes during the incident until the man's body was located and police knew there was no threat, Rosen said.
