Jade Hafen was unable to compete until May, but thanks to a new roping partner and an immeasurable amount of determination, he will be competing in both calf roping and tie-down roping.
"It's nice to see him competing again," said Kim Hafen, noting he graduated in the top 10 percent of his class at Pine View High School a week ago. "He's not going just to be there. He will compete to the best of his abilities. … He's a competitor, a hard worker. He's an Eagle Scout with a 3.9 GPA."
That work ethic has taken Jade Hafen from a sick bed to the arena in just a few months. His chances of making the national team might be bleak, but this teen knows something about beating the odds. And for his parents, just worrying about whether or not he catches a calf will be a relief.
"I never thought I would take anything for granted after losing Max," Kim Hafen said. "I don't need another tuneup. … I won't take life for granted."
