With brightest star, Galaxy turns to bench to finally snap streak of ties

TORONTO — Substitute Edson Buddle scored the winning goal late in the second half to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 2-1 win over Toronto FC on Saturday, extending their unbeaten streak to 10 games.

It also was the first victory for the Galaxy (2-1-9) after five straight draws.

They broke a 1-1 tie in the 77th minute when Alan Gordon's pass sent a streaking Buddle in alone to score against his former team. The goal was the second of the year for Buddle, who came on in the 66th minute for Chris Klein.

Gordon had given Los Angeles an early lead with his third goal of the year. Eddie Lewis' corner kick in the sixth minute found an unmarked Gordon, who headed a shot past goalkeeper Stefan Frei.

Toronto FC drew even in the 62nd minute after Chad Barrett's shot bounced off the post to striker Danny Dichio, who nodded it into an open net. The Galaxy argued the equalizer was offside, but after the linesman and match official convened, it was ruled a goal.

Los Angeles coach Bruce Arena was without leading scorer Landon Donovan, who is in Chicago to play with the U.S. team in a World Cup qualifier against Honduras. That game also resulted in Toronto missing its top scorer, Honduras native Amado Guevara.

Toronto (4-5-4) has lost two straight and three of four.

CREW 2, WIZARDS 0: At Kansas City, Kan., Guillermo Barros Schelotto capitalized on an early defensive mistake for a goal, then tacked on a second-half penalty kick for another, and Columbus Crew broke an eight-match road winless streak. Schelotto's eight goals this season tie him with Colorado's Conor Casey, who was on U.S. national team duty Saturday, for the league scoring lead.

Andy Gruenebaum made three saves in the Crew's first shutout of the year.

CHIVAS 1, SOUNDERS 0: At Los Angeles, Eduardo Lillingston scored in the 38th minute on a rebound shot inside the box past Seattle keeper Kasey Keller who had just blocked a shot by Paulo Nagamura.

Chivas (7-2-3) continues to lead the Western Standings with 24 points while Seattle (4-2-5) lost for only the second time this season. SounderNate Jaquawas ejected in the 88th minute.
