Andrew Putnam, 19, returned to his Riverton neighborhood Saturday afternoon to find his street blocked by sheriff's vehicles and yellow crime-scene tape.

"It's always been one of the best neighborhoods," Putnam said. "It's really relaxed. Everyone is so nice to each other. That's why it's so shocking."

Terry Price, who lives down the street from Steven Knighton, said he was awakened by what he thought was teenagers banging on a metal sign. Price said he thought it was just high schoolers celebrating graduation.

"We didn't know for sure (what it was)," he said, "but when the police show up and you see them taking a body, you know something's going on."

Steven Knighton's wife and adult stepdaughter were present in the house at the time of the shooting, and police say the wife was close to the spot where shooting occurred.

Shad Knighton was most recently from Cottonwood Heights and did not live with his brother and his brother's family in Riverton.

Court records show that Shad Knighton was going through a divorce. Police say he hasn't lived with his spouse for some time.
