Development vote expected in Layton

LAYTON — The Layton City Council is expected to vote Thursday on a rezone request by a developer who wants to build 303 housing units in an area known for damaging landslides.

The expected vote likely will take place in front of resident-formed coalitions to oppose the development. The meeting is set for 7 p.m. at Layton City Hall, 437 N. Wasatch Drive.

The residents say they are not opposed to all development; they just want responsible development.

Adams Property LLC has the go-ahead from two geotechnical firms, which have stated that the developer's plans are feasible. The development plan calls for mass grading, which is designed to level the hills in the developer's 70-acre parcel. The developer also plans to stay away from a hillside on its property.

But residents are concerned about the influx of homes, cars and people, how schools will be affected and what will happen to groundwater that already causes problems for some.

In 2007, the City Council tabled a similar petition until Adams Property could do further studies.

In March, the Layton Planning Commission issued a favorable recommendation on the rezone, conceptual site plan and development agreement.
