Truck drifts off I-70; toddler dies in crash
SALINA — A 2-year-old boy was killed after a vehicle drifted off I-70 Wednesday morning.
The single-vehicle accident occurred 34 miles east of Salina at 7:49 a.m. as a vehicle drove off the left side of the freeway, near the Sevier/Emery county line, according to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Nigbur.
The driver of the Toyota pickup truck steered back onto the road, then apparently overcorrected, causing the truck to roll onto its right side, partially ejecting and killing Rayly Mejia at the scene, investigators said.
The driver said another vehicle forced them off the road, but troopers are investigating the possibility of the driver being fatigued, Nigbur said.
The investigation is on-going and the driver's name is not being released at this time. Neither alcohol, drugs nor speed is suspected in the wreck, according to a release from the UHP.
The truck was carrying four occupants and all were wearing seat belts, according to UHP. The occupants are from Compton, Calif.
