DUCHESNE — A 10-year-old girl was in critical condition after being hit by a pickup truck Tuesday, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

The girl, whose name was not being released, was crossing U.S. Highway 40 on her bicycle with a friend about 1 p.m., troopers said. The girls were in the crosswalk, and several vehicles in the eastbound lanes had stopped for them.

But troopers said Theresa Thomas of West Valley City was driving west on the highway and apparently did not see the girls. Investigators believe she hit the 10-year-old at the intersection of U.S. 40 and state Route 191.

U.S. 40 serves as main street in Duchesne.

Witnesses said the girl who was hit was thrown several feet and knocked unconscious. She was taken to Uintah Basin Medical Center in Roosevelt and later flown to a Salt Lake area hospital in critical condition.

The crash remains under investigation.
