Symposium Saturday on atrial fibrillation

Utahns who experience an irregular heartbeat are invited to attend a free symposium Saturday that will explain atrial fibrillation, its symptoms, medication and treatment options.

Sessions will be at Intermountain Medical Center from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and again from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the hospital's Education Auditorium, 5121 S. Cottonwood St., Murray.

A related workshop is scheduled that day for patients with defibrillator implants from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the same location.

Nationally renowned cardiac psychologist Samuel Sears will address issues and questions associated with the disorder.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm problem in the U.S., affecting about 2.2 million Americans. About 15 percent of strokes occur in people with the disorder, and in some people it causes no obvious symptoms.

In others, it may cause uncomfortable symptoms such as shortness of breath, palpitations, difficulty exercising, chest discomfort, dizziness or fainting, or stroke or ministroke.
