Log Haven in Millcreek Canyon is hosting a Meet the Makers Night on May 28, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Guests can meet four local food producers, who will showcase their specialties at the waterfall patio. They include Cristiano Creminelli of Creminelli Fine Meats, David Perkins of High West Distillery, Tim Welsh of Beehive Cheese, and Clark Goble of Amano Chocolate. The restaurant also continues its Lobster Tail special through May. You can add a lobster tail to any entree for $10, and if you order your entree by 6:30 p.m., the lobster tail is complimentary. Also the restaurant is continuing its Industry Night through May. Every Sunday night, employees of any restaurant receive a 25 percent discount off the entrees. The offer applies to tables of eight or less, and one person in the party must present a valid restaurant paycheck stub. The offer doesn't apply to early bird specials, private events or other promotions (801-272-8255).

Mandarin Restaurant, 348 E. 900 North, Bountiful, received the Utah Governor's Mansion Artist Series Award for the Culinary Arts. On April 22, the restaurant's chef, Zhen Wei Liu, created an eight-course Chinese banquet for Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., the first lady and 16 of their guests. The Mandarin, owned by the Skedros family, has been in business for 32 years. The restaurant was also named 2009 Small Business of the Year by the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce (www.mandarinutah.com or 801-298-2406).

The 20th Annual Tabasco Community Cookbook Awards seek community cookbooks published through 2008-2009,that chronicle and preserve local culinary traditions. The first-place winner receives a $2,500 contribution to its organization; second place receives $1,000 and third place is $750. Entry forms and information are available on www.tabasco.com. Entry deadline is Sept. 25. The awards have granted nearly $100,000 to charities and organizations in the past 20 years.
