Monsen got quite a bit of help in lifting Richfield to another 2A title in its final year, after scoring 202 points, before moving to 3A. Besides his sweep, the Wildcats won all three relays, had Eric Durrant win in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles and had Tayson Whittaker claim first in both the shot put and discus.
Coming up short against Juab a year ago became a season-long motivator.
"A lot of the guys were sore about it," Monsen said. "A lot of them are seniors. We just came out here and wanted to prove to everybody that we're ready and we've got a dang good team."
While Norris enjoyed individual glory in 1A, Rich emerged as the top team. The Rebels scored 116.5 points to claim the championship after losing to the Bobcats by a half-point last spring.
In 4A, Timpview claimed top team honors with 81 points and Davis finished with 127.67 points to emerge as the 5A champion for a third consecutive season.
The Darts boasted strong performances in the distance races and field events.
Devin Lang and Seth Gutzwiller combined to sweep the distance events. Lang added to his 1,600 title by winning the 800 in 1:53.71. Gutzwiller finished in 9:29.10 to claim victory in the 3,200.
Davis senior Tony Hill threw 56 feet, 11.25 inches to add a shot put title to the one he claimed in discus on Friday. Darts senior Ryan Avery successfully defended his state title in the long jump, edging out teammate Jon Ferguson with a jump of 22-7.75.
"Not many teams have the depth in field events like we have," Hill said.
In 4A, Jason Whittingham led the T-Birds individually, winning the 4A shot put title with a best throw of 54-8.75.
Snow Canyon and Bountiful both supplied memorable individual performances.
For the Warriors, Adam Hine claimed his fourth straight long jump title after going 21-11.50. Hayden Hawks added to his victory in the 1,600 with another in the 3,200, finishing in 9:20.61 to beat Timpview's Jon Nelson.
Hawks didn't reach his goal of setting a 4A record. But he was pleased to finally outlast Nelson when it counted.
"I've been trying to chase him down all year," Hawks said. "I worked really hard this winter to see if I could get him in track season."
Benny Harper led the Braves with victories in the 100 and 200.
Bingham earned victories in all three relay races, becoming the first 4A or 5A team to do so at a state meet.
