SUV rollover severs woman's left foot

A woman's foot was severed just above her ankle Friday night when the sport utility vehicle she was riding in rolled multiple times.

Capt. Clint Smith, a spokesman for the Unified Fire Authority, said the vehicle was traveling south on I-15 near Bangerter Highway when the accident happened. The vehicle was occupied by three people whose ages ranged from mid- to late-20s. It is unclear what caused the vehicle to roll, but alcohol is being investigated as a possible factor in the crash.

The vehicle came to rest on its side, landing on the woman's left foot and severing it at the scene. She was flown by air ambulance to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Those traveling with the woman suffered minimal injuries that Smith described as bruises and lacerations. It is unclear if the occupants were wearing seat belts.
