In game one, Southern Utah lit up the board first with an RBI single by Colby Ford in the top of the second inning. However, it was the last runs that the T-Birds would see until the top of the fifth inning as South Dakota State ripped off two runs in the bottom of the second and five runs in the bottom of the third to take a commanding 7-1 lead after three.

SUU chipped away with an RBI double by Bucky Aona in the fifth, an RBI single by Justin Neuhart in the seventh and an RBI single by Nick Freitas in the top of the eighth, but it was the only runs for the T-Birds down the stretch.

Southern Utah's starter, Kyle Melling, allowed seven runs (six earned) on five hits and three walks with a strikeout in four innings, recording the loss. SDSU's Isaac Johnson threw five innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and three walks with one strikeout for his fourth victory of the season. Trever Vermeulen pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for his second save of the 2009 campaign.

In game two, early runs spelled defeat for the Thunderbirds again as the Jackrabbits put together five runs over the course of the first two frames. Southern Utah matched SDSU's run in the bottom of the first with a run of its own in the top of the second as Keli'i Zablan scored on a balk surrendered by SDSU starter Layne Somsen.

South Dakota State's four runs in the bottom of the frame were not echoed until SUU broke through with a run in the top of the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Aona and Chester Wilson. But, once again, SDSU answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and four runs in the bottom of the fifth as the home team took an 11-2 lead after five.

Southern Utah strung together its first multi-run inning with three in the top of the sixth as Zablan and Ray Wright recorded RBI singles and Tyler Hogge recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 11-5. The Jackrabbits' final run came in the bottom of the sixth and then relief pitcher Austin Busse took to the hill in the top of the seventh and recorded the final three outs to seal the SDSU victory.

SUU starter Alec Reichle pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and three walks with one strikeout to fall to 2-6 on the year. Somsen allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts in five innings for the win (3-7).
