UTAH
BASEBALL: Led by four hits from Austin Jones, the Utes exploded for 15 runs to defeat San Diego State, 15-5, on Friday at Lindquist Field in Ogden.
Jones had a home run, two doubles and a single on the day, driving in seven runs. Both of his doubles came with the bases loaded. Gavin Green was 3-for-4 with three RBIs while Corey Shimada, Tyler Yagi and Nick Kuroczko each had two hits for Utah.
"We had a good all-around ballgame," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We pitched well, played great defense and putting 15 runs on the board is always good. Austin Jones and Gavin Green really had great days. The sixth inning was really big for us and we had some key hits with two outs."
With the score tied 2-2 after the first inning, Utah scored a run in the second and three in the third to take a 6-2 lead. Yagi drove in Shimada in the second while C.J. Cron, Jones and Green each had RBI hits in the third.
Up 8-4, the Utes broke the game open in the sixth inning with seven runs. Michael Beltran had an RBI triple in the inning, while Jones and Green each drove in two runs for Utah.
On the mound, pitcher Andrew Wilding picked up his second win of the season, going 5 2/3 innings with five strikeouts.
BYU
MEN'S GOLF: BYU's two individual golfers, Brady Johnson and Robbie Fillmore, continue to play well at the NCAA West Regionals at the par-72 Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif.
With one round remaining to be played this morning, Johnson is currently tied for fifth place overall at 5-under-par following an even-par round two, while Fillmore showed well with a 3-over second round.
Six regional events throughout the country will yield five teams apiece to send to the NCAA Championships May 25-30 at the Inverness Country Club in Toledo, Ohio. The top individual not a member of the five advancing teams from each region will also be sent to the championship.
If the top five teams Arizona State (-22), Oregon (-16), UC-San Diego (-10), Texas A&M (-9) and USC (-7) maintain their positions to advance to the championship, Johnson would maintain his spot as the top individual not a member of the five advancing teams and would thus advance himself.
