WEST JORDAN — A construction crew working on a light rail line in West Jordan struck a natural gas line Friday evening, shutting down local traffic and putting medical authorities on alert.

No one was injured and Questar Gas arrived at the scene and kinked the pliable 4-inch gas line, stopping the leak, soon after the crew reported the incident.

Workers were digging to install a concrete drainpipe near the residential area of 4800 W. Old Bingham Highway as part of the Mid-Jordan light rail line construction project when equipment nicked the pipeline at about 6 p.m., according to Mark Mcelreath, West Jordan assistant fire chief.

"It shouldn't interrupt (natural gas) service," Mcelreath said. It was expected the repairs would be completed during the night.

Police averted traffic at 4800 South until about 8 p.m.
