The fifth season of "So You Think You Can Dance" doesn't get under way until next week, but Fox is already gearing up for the sixth season.
Auditions for Season 6 will begin in two weeks, and Fox announced that Salt Lake City will be one of the stops.
It probably seemed like a perfectly good day when they chose it, but the auditions were scheduled on Friday, July 24 — Pioneer Day. Which means that auditioners will be fighting the crowds gathered for the parade.
At this point, no venue for the Salt Lake auditions has been announced. So it's entirely possible that they'll be somewhere other than, say, the Capitol Theatre in the middle of downtown Salt Lake City. Which is where they were held when Season 4 auditions came to Utah in February 2008.
Ah, well. Chances are the weather will be better this time around. Auditioners had to be sheltered in the Salt Palace because it was so cold and snowy the last time.
This time, the biggest problem may be dodging floats and marching bands.
Actually, at this point, we're not entirely sure what's going to happen. Oh, the "So You Think You Can Dance" auditions are definitely returning to Utah. The producers love Utah. The last time they were here, it resulted in four finalists from the state making the top 14.
A year before that, Utahn Sabra Johnson was the "SYTYCD" winner. Two years before that, Utahns Allison Holker and Jaymz Tuaileva were both finalists.
And the upcoming auditions will probably take place about July 24. Maybe just not right on July 24.
Stay tuned for more information ...
IT'S NOT OFFICIAL, but it's clear that Fox won't be waiting until the summer of 2010 to air Season 6 of "So You Think You Can Dance."
The pattern since 2006 has been to hold auditions early in the year, start airing the show in May and wrap things up in August.
Holding a new round of auditions just after starting a new season clearly indicates we're going to see Season 6, if not this fall, then certainly early in 2010.
"SYTYCD" HOPEFULS should log on to fox.com/dance to find out more.
Registration will begin at 8 a.m. on the day of the auditions. Auditioners traveling to cities for the open calls should make arrangements to stay for at least two days following their initial audition, in the event of a callback.
Contestants must be no younger than 18 or older than 30 on the first day they register for auditions. Any contestant who is a minor in their state of residence must also have a parent or legal guardian sign all required documents.
Again, check fox.com/dance for full eligibility rules.
