Driver still unconscious after deadly Roy crash
A man involved in a crash that killed a Roy woman remains hospitalized, with investigators considering criminal charges against him.
Police said Thursday that Richard Bash, 40, is unconscious at a local hospital after the Wednesday night crash that killed Wendy Kerbs, 54.
"We drew blood at the hospital, but he's still unconscious," said Roy Police Capt. Jack Bell. "As far as charges, we'll be screening with the county attorney this afternoon."
Police said Bash was driving a sport utility vehicle about 5 p.m. Wednesday near 3100 West and 5800 South when the vehicle veered off the road and crashed into Kerbs, who was doing yard work with her husband in front of their home.
"He sped up and was passing another car, lost control, braked, there was some skid, the vehicle rolled, took out a power pole, the lady in her front yard, took her out and ran into a pine tree," Bell said Thursday.
Police said that after the crash, Bash crawled out of the wrecked car and tried to run away. Officers told the Deseret News on Wednesday night that Bash tried to get into a couple of different houses before being found, lying in a nearby field. Police said there is no indication that Bash was racing or involved in a road-rage incident. Officers, however, said alcohol impairment is "a possibility."
Investigators planned to meet with the Weber County Attorney's Office late Thursday to discuss potential criminal charges. The charges, Bell said, could range from reckless driving to vehicular homicide.
