WVC to review cage fighting ordinance
WEST VALLEY CITY — An ordinance regulating ultimate fighting will be back before the City Council on Tuesday following months of study and delay.
The ordinance would make hand-to-hand combat events a conditional use, subject to approval by the planning commission.
If passed, the law would allow police officers to have control over the number of officers necessary at each event. The city building officer, fire chief and county health department would also have to approve events.
The ordinance does not prohibit fighting events based on the size of the venue, in contrast to an earlier draft of the ordinance that would have limited them to the city-owned E Center.
In addition to regulating cage fighting, the proposed ordinance would govern concerts, fairs, festivals and other events that attract 500 people or more, according to a city staff report.
The events will be permissible in some manufacturing and commercial areas of the city and state code will have to be followed.
