BYU

BASEBALL: BYU senior rightfielder Michael Bowen and San Diego State junior righthander Stephen Strasburg have been named the Mountain West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Bowen, an Acworth, Ga., native, hit .600 (12-for-20) from the plate, with three home runs, one double, 10 RBI and seven runs scored as BYU went 3-2 last week, including a three-game sweep of UNLV in conference play. In game one of a two-game series vs. 10th-ranked Kansas State, Bowen went 3-for-5 with a solo home run, two RBI and one run scored in BYU's 9-8 extra-inning loss. In game two vs. the Wildcats, he went 3-for-4 with a double in an 11-3 loss. In the opener of a three-game conference series vs. UNLV, Bowen went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and three runs scored in a 15-12 win. In game two, he went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored in BYU's 7-3 victory. Bowen concluded the series with a 3-for-4, six-RBI and one-run scored performance, including a home run, a double and three stolen bases in BYU's 14-13 win.

Southern Utah

SOFTBALL: Thunderbirds Kristina Brooks, Caroline Fernandez and Jenavieve Purcell were honored as members of the Summit League All-Tournament Team. Fernandez, a senior catcher, batted .333 with a home run, a triple, four RBI and a .889 slugging percentage. Brooks, a junior left-handed pitcher, threw every inning of the three SUU games, winning one with a 2.33 ERA, and 15 strikeouts; and Purcell, a sophomore center fielder, batted .455, and went 4-for-4 in the Thunderbirds' upset 2-0 victory against defending champ Western Illinois.

MEN'S GOLF: Nate Page will become the Thunderbirds' first NCAA finals competitor in golf this week, as he begins competition in the NCAA Regional Thursday. Page was assigned to the Stillwater, Okla. regional tournament, which is being contested over the par 72, 7,407-yard Karsten Creek Golf Club. The regional is being hosted by Oklahoma State University.

Page, a senior from Orem (Mountain View HS), was one of 45-at-large selections into this year's tournament. He is Southern Utah's second NCAA post-season qualifier in golf. Kenny Ebalo was the first, following the 2004-05 season, but Ebalo's bid for a finals appearance ended at the regional level, at Stanford.

Utah State

TRACK & FIELD: Utah State's James Allred and Clint Silcock swept the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week. Allred was also named the Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week. The WAC honors are selected by the conference office, while the USU award is chosen by a statewide media panel.
